Teleport Awards For Excellence

Since 1995, WTA has presented annual awards to companies and individuals who have dramatically demonstrated excellence in the field of teleport operations, development and technology. Winners receive a presentation photograph, an Award, and assistance with promotion of their achievement. The Teleport Awards for Excellence are presented on the opening day of the annual SATELLITE conference and exhibition in Washington, DC, during a luncheon ceremony to which WTA members are invited and SATELLITE attendees may attend by paying a small registration fee.

2019 Teleport Awards For Excellence Photos

Independent Teleport Operator of the Year
Santander Teleport (Spain) Santander Teleport is an independent teleport operator offering satellite communication services in C, X and Ku bands for enterprise and government markets in a number of sectors including maritime, enterprise, and defense.

The company´s mission is to provide highly reliable satellite communications services and solutions to enable our clients to outperform in the most hostile environments, and ultimately becoming a worldwide reference in the industry.

 Teleport Technology of the Year
nanoCDN by Broadpeak (France). Broadpeak's nanoCDN for satellite allows satellite operators to deliver a true multiscreen experience with Adaptive Bitrate content while preserving the quality of traditional satellite distribution. The technology converts unicast streams into multicast so that content can be delivered over the satellite to a local gateway.

 

Teleport Executive of the Year
Guido Neumann, Managing Director, CETel (Germany). Guido has actively engaged himself during several major events in the SatCom industry, e.g. VSAT Global, VSAT Congress, Satellite 2017 and will be speaking during SES industry days on Nov 12 in Cape Town. It has been a great honor for Guido to be selected for membership in the Customer Advisory Board(CAB) of one of the major satellite operators in 2018. Within this function he proactively contributes to the strategic alignment and positively strengthen the relationship between service providers and satellite operators. Further to that Guido is acting proactively within important projects at CETel and gives advice to project management teams and our sales force upon request. All emplyoees at CETel value his operational engagement besides his excellent leadership skills. Guido also focuses on the strategic development of CETel and the related organic and inorganic growth activities.

Lifetime Achievement Award

William Bartlett Walton Jr. , “Bill Walton”, Chairman, W.B. Walton Enterprises (USA) Formed in 1979, during the 1980s Walton De-Ice, led by Bill Walton, grew up with the satellite communications industry, performing work for Western Union, Comsat, and RCA, as well as government projects. Today, it’s hard to imagine the C-band industry delivering reliable services without de-icing. Walton Initially developed systems for C-band, and adding Ku-Band systems in the 1980’s. As our industry moved from C-band only to include Ku-band, Walton De-Icing systems become essential for efficiently de-icing earth station antennas.   Walton worked with earth station builders such as Vertex RSI, Scientic Atlanta, and others to build de-icing systems. Walton De-Ice  has since become synonymous with earth station antenna De-Icing. Bill Walton was there from the beginning, growing with the industry, and building Walton De-Ice over the last four decades.

W.B. Walton, was the underwriter of the 2019 Teleport Awards for Excellence Ceremony and Luncheon. W.B. Walton Enterprises designs and manufactures a line of equipment that prevents the accumulation of snow and ice on satellite earth station antennas. The company was founded in 1946 by William Walton, Sr. originally to do electrical contract work for companies like Western Union, RCA and Comsat. In 1979, William Walton, Jr., present President and Owner, took on the considerable challenge of fighting the harsher elements of weather that affect satellite communications. Since then, W.B. Walton has become the leading satellite company in providing quality products protecting earth stations during poor weather conditions.

Independent Teleport Operator of the Year
Telespazio (Italy) Telespazio operates worldwide through a network of space centres and teleports. Among them, the most important is the Fucino Space Centre, 130 km from Rome, that, with a surface area of 370,000 square meters, 172 operating antenna, 22 control rooms (of which 5 are manned 24/7), is one of the largest teleports for civil purposes, in the world. The Fucino Space Centre carries out in-orbit satellite control and telecommunications, television and multimedia services. Fucino hosts the Control Centre of the COSMO-SkyMed Earth observation satellite constellation and one of the Control Centres that manage the European Galileo satellite positioning and navigation system.

Teleport Technology of the Year
Alusat by Integrasys (Spain). Alusat is an evolution of Integrasys’ industry-leading Satmotion Pocket technology which allows accurate installation during remote commissioning. Alusat allows the consistent monitoring of a VSAT site after installation to ensure optimisation of operation and the minimisation of costs caused by service failures and site re-visits. Alusat allows a virtual visit to every site on the network.

Teleport Executive of the Year
Carlos Raba, Managing Director and CFO, Santander Teleport (Spain). Carlos leadership and business skills have taken the company to a steady growth since its launch in 2010, with an extraordinary year in terms of revenue growth from new and existing customers, with new hires that have added an outstanding contribution to the operations and engineering teams.

Etisalat, was the underwriter of the 2018 Teleport Awards for Excellence Ceremony and Luncheon. Teleport Executive of the Year
Abel Avellan, President and Chief Strategy Officer of Global Eagle (USA). As a result of GEE’s transformational acquisition of EMC ths year, Abel Avellan, the former founder and CEO of EMC, became the company’s president and chief strategy officer. The combined companies now make up one of the world’s largest providers of satellite-based connectivity and content to the rapidly growing global mobility market.
Avellan has over 25 years of experience as a trained engineer and played a major role in developing several of EMC’s patented applications designed for bandwidth re-utilization, noise reduction and reduction of antenna sizes for fixed and mobile networks. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Simón Bolívar University.
In 2015, Euroconsult, the leading global consulting firm specializing in space markets, presented Avellan with its “Strategic Transaction of the Year” award, acknowledging his role in another important merger – the acquisition of EMC with MTN in 2015.

Crystal, was the underwriter of the 2017 Teleport Awards for Excellence Ceremony and Luncheon. Teleport Executive of the Year
Pierre-Jean Beylier, CEO of SpeedCast (Australia). Under the leadership of Pierre-Jean Beylier, known as PJ, SpeedCast executed six acquisitions in 2015, significantly growing the company’s revenue, while achieving 99% retention of the staff in the acquired companies. This remarkable performance stems from corporate values summed up in the acronym “CAST” – Customer-focused, Agile and responsive, Success through people & safety and Team spirit. The work of integrating these acquisitions is called Project Bordeaux, whose goal is to turn six companies into one streamlined and efficient organization. Project Bordeaux stresses communication: giving all team members visibility into what the organization is doing, what it has achieved and what is coming next.
