Teleport Awards

Presented at an invitation ceremony and luncheon on Tuesday, February 20 at SATELLITE 2007 in Washington DC, USA.

Angus Blackwood, Customer Services Director, Arqiva Satellite Media Solutions.

Independent Teleport Operator of the Year
Arqiva Satellite Media Solutions
United Kingdom

The growth of the British teleport’s services to the broadcasting, retail, oil and gas and financial services industry propelled Arqiva to the number three rankings in both WTA’s Independent Top Twenty and Fast Twenty operators of 2006. The company's teleports in Bedford, Chalfont, Winchester and Morn Hill supported nearly 230 new contract wins that year. New customers generated by Managing Director Nick Thompson and his team included Sky Sports, Viacom Outdoor and Camelot (operators of UK’s National Lottery). Of particular note to the Independent Operators Award committee was the broad range of business the company has mastered, from developing and operating a digital content distribution network for 30 stations in the London Underground - the nation's largest single digital advertising network - to designing and installing the UK's first nationwide digital cinema satellite network. At the time of the announcement in Washington, Arqiva Satellite Media Solutions was in the midst of acquiring BT’s satellite broadcast business.

Brent Gale, Vice President, Satellite and Operations, Echostar Satellite.

Corporate Teleport Operator of the Year
Echostar Satellite LLC
United States

The company’s system of seven regional teleports, in support of the company’s core business of satellite TV, was acknowledged as 2006’s best in support of a corporate mission. The company was cited for its provision of over 3,000 unique international business communication services, including DTH (through the DISH Network), government broadcast services, and broadband two-way satellite Ka-band services. WTA cited the ability of Echostar to gather and retransmit over 1,200 local TV stations from 178 regional DMAs. Due to the geographic diversity of four regional sites, the company was able to achieve, according to WTA, "significant and impressive frequency reuse which is unprecedented in the industry.” The award was accepted by Brent Gale, Senior Vice President, who was named WTA’s Teleport Executive of the Year in 2004.

David Rivel, CEO and Founder of RRSat Global Communications Network.

Teleport Executive of the Year
David Rivel
Founder & CEO, RRSat Global Communications Network

In a part of the world where news is made at a furious pace, Mr. Rivel was cited by WTA for building RRSat’s capabilities to handle this turbulent flow of content from the region to a world hungry for information. In 2006, RRSat became the ninth-ranked independent operator in the world in terms of revenue, according to WTA, and Mr. Rivel succeded in taking the company public in the United States, a feat accomplished by few in the teleport sector. Under his management, RRSat has chalked up a string of impressive achievements, including an alliance with Eutelsat that extends its reach into the Asian broadcast market, the opening of a standup facility in Israel to accommodate live transmissions for news agencies, support for coverage of a series of crises, from military operations to the hospitalization of the Israeli prime minister, and an expansion of its fiber network by 40%, inicluding the development of new POPs worldwide. In the past year, the company added 50 channels to its roster, including the launch of Baby TV, a commercial-free service over HotBird-5 and Thaicom5.

Daniel Enns, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing for Comtech EF Data is congratulated by Jon Kirchner of Loral Skynet.

Teleport Technology of the Year
Double Talk Carrier-in-Carrier (C-in-C) from Comtech EF Data
United States

A unanimous selection by WTA’s Technology of the Year committee, C-in-C by Comtech EF Data was cited for its ability to reduce bandwidth requirements by 50% nominally, while keeping equivalent throughput and performance. The technology allows for both sides of a duplex link to be transmitted concurrently in the same segment of transponder bandwidth, which is of critical importance to teleport operators seeking to drive down costs and gain efficiencies as they serve customers. Nearly 400 modems are currently in the market.
