WTA Press Releases

(New York City, February 20, 2008) -- World World Teleport Association (WTA) named SES AMERICOM the recipient of its first Nova Award for the development and successful market launch of its IP-PRIME satellite-based IPTV service. By bestowing the first annual Nova Award on SES AMERICOM, WTA saluted daring innovation that significantly expanded the addressable market for satellite service providers.

WTA noted that AMERICOM’s entry into the American IPTV market took advantage of the move by large telephone carriers to compete for video delivery with cable and DTH. SES AMERICOM saw the potential to serve Tier Two and Three telephone carriers, as well as small cable and broadband companies, that were unable to compete with the technology investments of Tier One carriers.

To develop and deliver IP-PRIME, AMERICOM had to go beyond its core competency as a satellite carrier and tackle issues of broadcast rights, content security, program aggregation and broadband integration. WTA, a non-profit trade association headquartered in New York, added that, despite the challenges, AMERICOM brought IP-PRIME to market in cooperation with the US-based National Rural Telecommunications Council and (US) National Telecommunications Cooperative Association, and has begun to build a customer base.

WTA Executive Director Robert Bell said, "Before IP-PRIME, IPTV was a fiber play. With IP-PRIME, it became an opportunity for the teleport and satellite sector. AMERICOM had the vision to develop a business case, prove the technology, and invest for the long term - including a state-of-the-art origination center at the Vernon Valley teleport in New York State - in order to create a completely new market for our industry. That is the essence of what we seek to celebrate with the Nova Award."

About the Nova Award
Introduced in 2008, the Nova Award honors companies in the satellite and teleport sectors who accomplish the most challenging task in business: expanding the market, whether by successfully introducing a new technology, serving a new customer segment or proving a new business model. Throughout business history, innovative and forward-thinking companies propel sometimes explosive revenue growth and create unexpected new opportunities by thinking about a solution in a new or novel way.

Established in 2005, IP-PRIME is the leading, turn-key multi-channel, MPEG-4 IPTV solution, designed for any entity wanting to offer next generation video services. The service is based on a robust ecosystem of best-in-class technical and commercial partners including Amino, Cisco/Scientific Atlanta, ETI Software Solutions, Harmonic, NDS, National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA), Nokia Siemens Networks, Tribune Media Services, and Verimatrix. Since June 2007, IP-PRIME has offered a suite of solutions for operators including a lineup of more than 300 channels, including three dozen channels of HD.
