Clear Skies or Stormy Weather? Integrating the Cloud into Data and Media Services

Tuesday, March 11, 1:30-2:30 pm

Over the past year, the largest satellite operators announced high-profile partnerships with cloud service providers from AWS to MS Azure.  Less visible has the continuing integration of cloud services into the solutions that teleport operators offer to their data and media customers.  But it is an important trend because it is part of a wholesale rethinking by teleport operators of their place in the value chain as they evolve from standalone providers of services and transmission capacity to high-value nodes in global, multi-company networks.  In this session, a panel of expert practitioners explore the opportunities that partnership with cloud service providers can offer, the technical and policy requirements for interconnection, and what cloud service providers want from their outside partners.

Moderator:

  • Joel Nirenberg, Director, Strategic Solutions, ScheduALL Product Line, Net Insight

Speakers:

  • Fulvio Sansone, Co-Founder & CTO, SatADSL
  • Greg Quiggle, VP of Product Management, Kratos
  • Tim Jackson, SVP, Sales & Marketing, Globecast Americas

Managing VSAT Networks for Optimum Performance

Wednesday, March 12, 10:45-11:45 am

VSAT networks were once a standalone solution to a fundamental problem: how to connect dozens, hundreds or thousands of locations on a unified platform delivering dependable quality of service regardless of local conditions.  Today, VSAT networks operate in a different and more complex world.  RF interference continues to rise – generated in no small part by poorly installed and operated VSAT terminals. What was once a closed RF network is now an integrated RF-IP network integrating seamlessly with the enterprise network, which must be managed by IT staff with little or no satellite experience.  The sheer number of VSAT terminals in the network, and the huge growth in traffic, make networks harder than ever to manage without robust analytics and automation.  In this session, teleport, satellite and tech executives describe the challenges their networks face today, the techniques and tools they use to overcome them, and solutions that are in development to tackle the greater challenges of the future.

Moderator:

  • Tony Russell, President, CPI Antenna Systems

Speakers:

  • David Gelerman, President & CEO, Spacebridge
  • Jon Sala, VP, Data Products & IP Services, Eutelsat
  • Eric Botsford, Satellite Engineering Supervisor, ExxonMobile
  • Keith Johnson, COO & EVP, Speedcast

Teleports and Big Data

Wednesday, March 12, 1:45-2:45 pm

More than most buzzwords, Big Data stands for something with direct impact on your business.  It is information with three characteristics beginning with the letter “v” – high volume, high velocity generated by real-time data collection, and great variety ranging from the highly structured to the completely unstructured.  Its value lies not in the data alone but in the ability of data analytics, typically employing machine learning, to turn the data into actionable knowledge.  And finally, it has been enabled by that other key trend, the rise of cloud computing, which makes massive computing power available on a pay-as-you-go model instead of through a massive capital investment.  As the B2B transmission business becomes increasingly complex, Big Data expertise is becoming key to the survival and success of service providers in every major market.  In this session, teleport technologists describe how Big Data and analytics are optimizing their services, winning new business and retaining customers by solving their most pressing problems.
