Green Teleport of the Year
Essel Shyam Communication
In the spring of 2006, Essel Shyam established a "Green” initiative that includes use of solar heating and establishment of a comprehensive plan for use of alternative energy within 5 years; switching to high-efficiency illumination devices that will reduce energy consumption by up to 15% in three years; maintaining the air-conditioning within the facilities at a temperature 0.5 degrees higher, resulting in 18-20% savings over three years; and remodeling the existing facility for energy efficiencies and low carbon emissions as well as using recycled materials in future infrastructure where possible.
Teleport Executive of the Year
President of NewCom International
Mr. Dickinson’s ardent belief that communications is the key to education, economic development and stabilization in developing countries and his dedication to bringing 21st Century communications to vital regions throughout Africa, the Middle East and Latin America have propelled NewCom to become a leading provider of satellite communication services to these regions. In honoring Mr. Dickinson, WTA noted NewCom’s recent contract to provide satellite transport services to 600 remote locations throughout Colombia. The initiative was signed in the spring of 2009 and funded through Colombia’s Ministry of Communications. Launched in partnership with Colombia-based telecom provider Contecol, the initiative provides high-speed Internet access to hospitals, schools, police and fire departments, city government offices, and cyber cafes. Thanks to the speed, efficiency and quality of NewCom’s work, the company was awarded an additional 350 sites in 2009 and another 1,000 sites in the first quarter of 2010.
Teleport Technology of the Year
Comtech EF Data’s CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem with VersaFEC®
Comtech’s CDM-625 is the industry’s first modem to combine a range of advanced technologies that allow for maximum savings under all conditions. VersaFEC provides maximum coding gain with the lowest possible latency to support cellular backhaul and other latency-sensitive voice, video and data applications. The CDM-625 with VersaFEC was specifically architected to support ACM for IP/Ethernet traffic. ACM maximizes throughput under all conditions – rain fade, inclined orbit satellite operation, antenna mispointing, noise, interference, and other impairments. This combination of advanced technologies enables multi-dimensional optimization including minimizing operating expenses, maximizing throughput and availability without using additional transponder resources, and minimizing capital expenses. Comtech EF Data’s Double Talk Carrier-in-Carrier was named 2007 Teleport Technology of the Year.
