World Teleport Association Publishes Satellite Operator Benchmarks 2013

(New York City, 13 March 2013) – The World Teleport Association today released Satellite Operator Benchmarks 2013, the third annual WTA global study. The study tracks, rates, and compares the operational and commercial performance of satellite operators, as experienced by teleport operators. The objective of the annual study, now in its third year, is to strengthen the global industry by encouraging self-improvement among all operating companies.

In the 2013 report, the "Big Three” of Eutelsat, Intelsat, and SES saw double-digit improvements in ratings of their commercial practices by teleport operators compared with 2011. In the area of operational performance, however, the world’s teleport operators perceived declines in the performance of three out of five satellite operators over the past 12 months.

There has been no let-up in competition within the satellite services business. All seven of the satellite operators covered by the WTA report were cited as a direct competitor to independent teleport operators in at least two-thirds of the total responses. This is a significant increase from 2012, according to WTA. The "Big Three,” however, saw double-digit improvements from 2012 to 2013 in how respondents perceived the fairness of that competition, an issue of particular concern to teleport operators. Arabsat and Telesat, meanwhile, declined in this area.

According to Robert Bell, WTA Executive Director, "When we began the Benchmarks reports three years ago, our goal was to speak for the teleport industry with a single voice about a sensitive issue. With the publication of our third annual Benchmarks report, we find that we now have established a genuine dialogue. Satellite operators have cooperated fully with WTA. They have listened to the concerns of their customers in the teleport sector and teleport operators have responded by giving them improved ratings in many areas. While there is much to be done, I am grateful for the progress that has been made through this partnership.”

The new report is available free to members of the Association, and for purchase by non-members, at www.worldteleport.org.
New Report From WTA Explores Best Practices in Buying Satellite Antennas and the RF Chain

(New York, NY December 13, 2012) -- The World Teleport Association released a new white paper, Best Practices in Buying Satellite Antennas and the RF Chain. The latest in the Four-Nines series of reports shares insights from WTA members on the trade-offs between cost and quality, standards-based and proprietary, and investment risk versus revenue opportunity of purchasing antennas and RF equipment. The report is made possible by the financial support of XipLink.

Best Practices in Buying Satellite Antennas and the RF Chain explores how to specify, negotiate and manage installation in order to obtain the greatest value and reduce the potential for costly errors, while making the technology provider a partner in the teleport's success. Satellite antennas represent a large expenditure with a long shelf life. For that reason, buyers put a substantial amount of time, care and energy into getting the purchase right. Getting it right involves multiple steps with multiple prospective vendors, and these steps form the basis of this report:

Specifying the purchase, from defining your requirements to writing clear specs and a statement of work.

Evaluating the proposals, including price, efficiency and total cost of ownership.

eciding on functional and design trade-offs that deliver the highest value for the lowest cost.

Integration and installation to ensure that your requirements are met in the final installed product.

After-market support to maintain maximum uptime and protect your investment.

Best Practices in Buying Satellite Antennas and the RF Chain is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association website.
World Teleport Association Publishes Inside the Top Operators Report

Analysis of pricing trends, major markets and top services from companies with $13bn in revenue, growing 7% per year

(New York, NY, November 6, 2012) – The World Teleport Association has published its annual Inside the Top Operators research report. The eagerly awaited report draws from data submitted to WTA by teleport operating companies around the world for the association’s 2011 Top Operator rankings, and offers a useful "snapshot” of the entire sector from independent operators large and small delivering service around the world.

The 2011 Top Operators, announced in November of that year, included companies with combined annual revenues of US$12.8 billion. Of this revenue, $9.7bn came from respondents that had submitted data to WTA consistently for the past five years. These companies posted a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.2% from 2007 to 2009, with total revenues rising $1.3bn over the period. But CAGR fell to 6.3% for the period from 2009 to 2011, when sales grew only $579m. For the five-year period, the group grew total revenues by $1.9bn for a CAGR of 7.6% - a still-impressive performance during the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

The report also shares data on facilities, services, markets, pricing and business results from the Top Operators, including:

Pricing Changes. One-quarter of independent teleport operators reported the ability to raise prices on their core services in 2011, up slightly from 2010, while 54% reported no price change for core services since 2010. More than 41% reported being able to increase prices for the resale of satellite capacity but only 18% said the same for terrestrial capacity.

Pricing Trends. An evaluation of responses to our pricing question since 2005 reveals that 2007-08 were bullish years for the teleport sector, when 40% or more of respondents reported being able to raise prices for core services. Since then, year-over-year pricing changes have resumed more normal levels, with 20-30% reporting price increases, 10-20% reporting price declines and the majority reporting stable prices.

Terrestrial and Satellite Transmission Pricing Continue to Head in Opposite Directions. The pricing of satellite capacity for resale has followed a similar trend to that of core teleport services but has been more prone to the upside and more volatile. By contrast, more teleport operators continue to report price declines for terrestrial capacity than price increases, which makes that capacity more competitive year after year.

Volume of Business Increases. Across all market segments, +60% of teleport operators reported that the volume of business increased from 2010 to 2011 while only 10-18% reported declines in total volume as measured by revenue.

The annual Top Operator rankings are developed by surveying teleport operators in many nations on their revenues and revenue growth and supplementing the results with financial data from publicly-traded firms. From this information, WTA publishes rankings of the Global Top 20 (companies by revenue including independents and satellite/fiber operators), the Independent Top 20 (companies by revenue excluding satellite and fiber operators), and the Fast 20 (based on year-over-year revenue growth, including independents and satellite/fiber operators).

Inside the Top Operators of 2011 is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association website.
New WTA Report Explores Reported Problems with Occasional-Use Satellite Access

(New York, NY, October 15, 2012) – The World Teleport Association today released a new report, Delays in Occasional-Use Satellite Access.
The report details results of a WTA investigation into problems
reported by its members in gaining timely access to occasional-use
satellite capacity. Based on survey responses from teleport operators
and discussions with satellite operators, the report lays out the issues
as well as offering preliminary conclusions and possible next steps.

At the end of 2011, WTA‐member teleport operators began reporting
issues with gaining timely occasional‐use access to satellite capacity.
In the television business in particular, OU access is time‐critical.
Member teleport executives reported that they were experiencing
increasing delays in completing access procedures, which they felt were
putting at risk their ability to meet the needs of their customers. WTA
set out to learn how frequent and serious the issue was for teleport
operators providing OU services, and what the root causes might be.

While seventy percent of respondents have experienced delays that they
did not expect in accessing OU capacity, the delays turn out to be
infrequent. For more than half the sample, unexpected delays occur four
or fewer times per year. Thirty-nine percent called it a serious
problem, but 61% considered it only somewhat serious or not a problem.

The two biggest causes of delays in such standard procedures as setting
cross-pol isolation or testing signal power are interference on the
transponder caused by a third party and an attempt by the end-user to
use capacity that had been scheduled, typically for full-time use, by a
third party.

WTA Executive Director and report author Robert Bell adds, "There are
clearly issues, and for a minority of teleport operators, they are
serious. But respondents believe that only a relatively small
percentage of such issues relate directly to the performance of
satellite operator staff or systems.”

The study suggests three specific areas that could be addressed between teleport operators and satellite operators:

 Better expectation‐setting for OU end-users

Examining procedures for providing access to capacity leased through third parties

 Continue addressing satellite interference

"All the satellite operators contacted for this report,” added Bell,
"appear eager to better understand OU-related concerns and to work
collaboratively on improvements.”

Delays in Occasional-Use Satellite Access is available free to
WTA members from the World Teleport Association website. Non-members

New World Teleport Association Report Explores The Role Of “Teleports In A Gigabit World”

(New York, NY, September 24, 2012) – The World Teleport Association today released a new white paper, Teleports in a Gigabit World, exploring how the continuing evolution of the Ka-band market and the technology race for gigabit throughput in C- and Ku-band are most likely to affect service providers. Based on interviews with senior executives of teleport, satellite and media companies, the report examines threats and potential opportunities and offers advice on what service providers can do today to defend against the downside as well as seize the upside.

Robert Bell discusses the new report.

High throughput satellite (HTS), a term coined in 2007 by research firm NSR, has pretty much been synonymous with the Ka-band of frequencies. But innovations in modem technology and satellite architecture are taking HTS mainstream, with big implications for the delivery of services to customers in media, government, military, oil & gas, mining, maritime and other markets.

WTA Executive Director and report author Robert Bell said, "In the short-term, service providers will implement HTS technologies as customer contracts renew and satellite leases come due. They will naturally include HTS in the options they offer to customers, and some customers will take the plunge. But those near-term opportunities should not blind service providers to the revolutionary impact of HTS on their business and the entire industry. Entry into the Gigabit World may be the biggest transition in the history of satellite.”

The report also lays out a specific steps providers should take to position their companies for the future:

Bet on Change. In both the short and long terms, HTS will create winners and losers in the market, and service providers need to think through what it takes to be on the winning side.

Prepare to Sell New Applications to New Customers. If the prophets of HTS revolution are correct, the satellite services business may well see its best growth opportunities in completely new lines of business. That is a major challenge to any company. You will need to stay alert to opportunities that might have seemed absurd in the past. They may still be absurd now, but they might just be a door opening to a new market.

Prepare to Compete with New Players. As HTS continues to evolve, satellite service providers are likely to compete with companies they have never faced before. Succeeding in these markets may require teleport operators to do something they have typically shied away from: investing in their own proprietary solutions. And creating your own technology solutions may require very different skills in business analysis, planning and operations.

Teleports in a Gigabit World is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association website.
New Report from WTA Explores the Best Practices in Contracting for Satellite Capacity

(New York, NY, June 13, 2012) – The World Teleport Association today released a new white paper, Best Practices in Satellite Capacity Contracts, which shares first hand experience into the often complex contracts for satellite capacity.

Best Practices in Satellite Capacity Contracts is based on interviews with executives of teleport operators that purchase satellite capacity, and satellite operators that sell it. The report spells out the basics of satellite capacity contracts including those hot areas that need particular attention. According to the report, there are four key areas to watch:

Length of the lease. Satellite contracts contain multiple provisions – from SLAs and interference to preemption and protection – that can be out of alignment with a teleport operator's customer contract in ways both obvious and subtle. The result is unrecognized risk for the teleport operator.

Resale rights. While it’s understandable that satellite operators want protection from competition from their own customers, prohibitions against resale for non-video applications can be challenging for teleport operators who purchase wholesale capacity.

Unlimited liabilities. Satellite capacity contracts frequently require teleport operators to sign for unlimited liability in the event of trouble on the satellite. These uncapped liabilities can be the single largest concern other than the basic commercial terms.

Lessons from Experience. Experienced buyers seek specifics in the contract on orbital location, protection and redundancy, and technical specifications. Inexperienced buyers put more trust in the vendor and accept higher-risk capacity deals in exchange for lower pricing.

According to WTA Executive Director Robert Bell, "Satellite capacity is the biggest running cost of the teleport business model. In a report released last year we discovered that teleport operators spent an average of 47% of revenue on satellite capacity and capacity spending ranged from a low of 14% of revenues to a high of 79%. Contracts are, not surprisingly, a hot topic. By interviewing both teleport operators and satellite operators, we were able to identify a number of areas that can become significant pitfalls in establishing a mutually beneficial, long-term relationship.”

Best Practices in Satellite Capacity Contracts is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association website.
WTA Releases 2nd Annual Satellite Operator Benchmarks Report

Multinational and local teleports rate the technical, operational and commercial performance of the Big Four operators

(New York City, March 7, 2012) – The World Teleport Association today released the second annual Satellite Operator Benchmarks report,
which covers interviews with over 80 teleport executives around the
world who rated the commercial and operational practices of the major
satellite operators. The new report is available free to members of the
association.

The report tracks, rates and compares performance, as experienced by a
major buyer segment of satellite capacity, and examines key elements of
the relationship between teleports and satellite providers, including
the quality of sales staff, customer communications, pricing
consistency, and the degree and fairness of competition with teleports.
WTA’s report also looks at operational availability, the handling of
interference and of outages, both planned and unplanned.

In operational practice, all of the satellite operators received a
strong ranking, on average, across all factors of the study.

As in the 2011 edition of the study, in commercial practice, there was a
significant spread between the top and lower-ranked operators. Arabsat
and Telesat were rated as the best performing commercial operators.
SES performed in the middle of the rankings and Intelsat and Eutelsat
were rated next, with the report indicating that teleport operators
believe these providers can improve performance against the commercial
parameters.

According to WTA, the 2012 Benchmarks report showed commercial and operational improvements in response to the results from the 2011 report.

Satellite Operators: Vendors and Competitors
Competition between teleport operators and satellite operators for the
same business, however, remains a complex and lingering issue.
Satellite operators are vendors to teleports. "But when they choose to
compete directly for the same business, their control of the orbital
asset gives them the power to offer prices no teleport operator can
match,” the report states.

According to Robert Bell, WTA Executive Director, "Competition is
complex, and there is no single right answer to competitive policy. We
thank the teleport executives who contributed to the study. We believe
that WTA can continue playing a constructive role in contributing to a
better understanding of the issues across the industry. We remain
commited to ensuring that teleport operators and satellite operators
continue the dialogue so that their customers can profit."

(New York City, January 24, 2012) – The World Teleport Association announced today the release of its newest report, How to Reduce Costs and Optimize Use of the Local Loop. The report shares the best practices of teleport operators for managing local connectivity, where costs, quality and availability can have a significant impact on business operations and financial results.

The local loop is a paradoxical part of a teleport's satellite and fiber connectivity. The distances covered are modest and the contribution to revenue from resale of local transmission is small. But teleport operators report that 90% of their problems in terrestrial transmission occur in the local loop, and that the cost and availability of high-quality service can become a deal-breaker for an otherwise promising opportunity.

WTA Executive Director Robert Bell notes, "This is an extremely competitive business and teleport operators are finding that understanding and optimizing their use of local connectivity can have an impact on their success far greater than the costs and revenues suggest. Executives interviewed for this report have been exploring alternatives from creating their own "meet-me rooms” to spur competition, to broadband wireless and ‘bonded’ 4G circuits. And, happily, meeting with success.”

How to Reduce Costs and Optimize Use of the Local Loop is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association Web site, thanks to the support of companies including Arabsat, Arqiva, Intelsat, RRsat Global Communications and SES.
World Teleport Association Announces Top Operator Rankings for 2011

(New York City, December 13, 2011) – World Teleport Association (WTA) announced its rankings of the Top Teleport Operators of 2011. The annual ranking provides a unique look into the diverse teleport sector of the global communications industry. For the first time in the history of the rankings, the teleport operators reported their total spending on satellite capacity. The total spending of the world’s Top 20 Independent Operators was nearly US$1 billion per year on transponder leasing, equal on average to 45% of their revenues.

Rankings were reported in three categories: the Independent Top Twenty, the Global Top Twenty, and what the association calls the "Fast Twenty.”

The Independent Top Twenty
The Independent Top Twenty ranks teleport operators based on revenue from all sources. The list focuses on the independent operators at the core of the business, excluding companies whose primary business is ownership and operation of a satellite fleet or terrestrial network. In 2011 four new operators joined the list – Cobbett Hill Earth station, Encompass Digital Media, Europe Media Port, and NewSat. In order from largest to smallest, the Independent Top Twenty of 2011 are:

Harris CapRock (USA)

GlobeCast (France)

Arqiva Broadcast & Media (UK)

Globecomm Systems (USA)

RRsat Global Communications (Israel)

Encompass Digital Media (USA)

TeleCommunications Systems (Government Services) (USA)

GE Satcom (Germany)

du (UAE)

Teleport Internacional Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Satlink Communications (Israel)

Essel Shyam Communciations (India)

NewSat (Australia)

Newcom International (USA)

Central Europe Telecom Services (Germany)

CET Teleport (Germany)

Jordan Media City (Jordan)

ATCi (USA)

Cobbett Hill Earth Station (UK)

Europe Media Port (Cyprus)

The Global Top Twenty
The Global Top Twenty ranks companies based on revenues from all customized communications sources and includes operators of teleports, satellite fleets and business-to-business fiber networks. Three companies make their debut on the Global Top Twenty list in 2011 – du, Encompass Digital Media and GE Satcom. In order from largest to smallest, the Global Top Twenty of 2011 are:

Intelsat (Luxembourg)

SES (Luxembourg)

Eutelsat (France)

Telenor Satellite Broadcasting (Norway)

Hughes Network Systems (USA)

Telesat (Canada)

Harris CapRock (USA)

EchoStar Satellite Services Corp. Newcomer Santander Teleport was the fastest of the fast with an impressive 531% growth – the kind of growth that only a startup company can generate in its first few years. Also new to the list are Encompass Digital Media, NewSat and SES. Ranked by revenue growth, the Fast Twenty of 2011 are:

Santander Teleport (Spain)

Encompass Digital Media (USA)

Europe Media Port (Cyrpus)

TeleCommunications Systems (Government Services) (USA)

Cobbett Hill Earth Station (UK)

Globecomm Systems (USA)

Newcom International (USA)

EchoStar Satellite Services Corp. These rankings provide a unique insight into the sometimes less glamorous realities of the teleport sector.

"This year the Top Operators survey has an interesting story to tell,” said Robert Bell, WTA’s Executive Director. "The Global Top Twenty had combined revenue of $12.85 billion, while the Independent Top Twenty had combined revenues of $2.15 billion. In the 2011 survey, respondents reported on their total spending on satellite capacity in the most recent, complete fiscal year. The Independent Operators spent $927 million on satellite capacity, which represented 45% on average of their total revenues. In addition, companies with less than $25 million in total revenues spent an average of 54% of their total revenues on satellite capacity. It’s interesting to note that capacity spending as a percentage of revenues varied widely – from a high of 70% to a low of 17% – depending on the teleport operator’s type of business.”

About World Teleport Association
Since 1985, the World Teleport Association (WTA) has focused on improving the business of satellite communications from the ground up.
WTA New Report Forecasts How Service Providers May Gain or Lose from the Interactive TV Revolution

(New York City, September 28, 2011) – The World Teleport Association announced today the release of its newest report, Future TV and the Teleport. The report seeks to highlight the aspects of today’s TV revolution most likely to affect teleport operators and other service providers, to explore the threats and potential opportunities it will create and to offer advice on what service providers can do today to defend against the downside and seize the upside.

Few can argue that the traditional business of linear television is morphing. Services are changing – from HDTV to 3DTV – while platforms are multiplying to encompass Internet delivery to the computer or tablet, streaming to the handheld device, download to PVRs, and over-the-top services that embed a Web browser and Internet-delivered content into the familiar TV set. The report explores how the global television industry may change as a result, and how demand for content management and delivery services will change along with it.

WTA Executive Director Robert Bell notes, "The business of broadband delivery is going to become massively more important to content distribution companies of every stripe. It is likely to become an increasingly competitive business at the same time that the "walled garden" approach to delivering exclusive content comes under increasing pressure. Most of the service providers surveyed for this report saw a silver lining in the rising complexity and uncertainty about the future of TV. They expect it to be a net positive for the companies that host, manage and distribute video.”

Future TV and the Teleport is available free to WTA members from the World Teleport Association Web site.
