(New York City, March 10, 2010) -- The World Teleport Association today named Essel Shyam Communication Limited of Noida, India its 2010 Green Teleport of the Year. Essel Shyam will be honored during WTA’s Teleport Awards for Excellence luncheon on March 16 during SATELLITE 2010.
In the spring of 2006, Essel Shyam established a "Green” initiative that includes use of solar heating and establishment of a comprehensive plan for use of alternative energy within 5 years; switching to high-efficiency illumination devices that will reduce energy consumption by up to 15% in three years; maintaining the air-conditioning within the facilities at a temperature 0.5 degrees higher, resulting in 18-20% savings over three years; and remodeling the existing facility for energy efficiencies and low carbon emissions as well as using recycled materials in future infrastructure where possible.
"Essel Shyam took on the green initiative with innovative techniques that were designed to maximize the surrounding environment as well as the seasons. It may not be the latest in high-tech, but in the last year, the company realized a reduction of energy consumption of 8.5%,” said WTA Executive Director Robert Bell. "Teleports spend between $300,000 and $1 million every year to power everything from transmission systems and information technology to HVAC and lighting. Essel Shyam is a model for what can be accomplished and a deserving winner for WTA’s first Green Teleport of the Year award.”
The Green Teleport Award was established as part of WTA’s 2009-2010 Green Teleport Campaign. The campaign kicked off in December with the publication of a white paper, "The Green Teleport: The Business Case for Sustainability,” and includes online resources to help members start reducing costs and carbon, as well as a recently complete survey of current energy management practices and concerns. In addition, the second WTA Member Forum, to be held on March 15 will focus on "Best Practices in Energy and Carbon Reduction and Energy Independence.”
On March 16, during a luncheon ceremony sponsored by SES, WTA will honor the winners of the 2010 Teleport Awards for Excellence, including the Green Teleport of the Year, Teleport Executive of the Year – previously announced on March 9 – as well as the winners of the Independent Teleport of the Year and Teleport Technology of the Year, which will be announced during the ceremony. Additional luncheon sponsors include Crystal Computer, JSAT International and Newtec.
