|Award-Winning Spyglass Carrier Monitoring System Provides Low-Cost Automated Spectrum Analysis Using Off-the-Shelf Hardware|
The Spyglass Carrier Monitoring System from Globecomm Systems gives satellite operators, teleport operators, and satellite service providers the ability to manage their uplink and downlink satellite carriers' performance automatically using a traditional spectrum analyzer, without additional hardware upgrades. The CMS performs real-time measurements and reports on single carrier and entire spectrum parameters such as power, frequency, and noise. Specific measurements available through the graphical user interface include C/No, (C+N)/N, Eb/No, effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), and center frequency.
The software was named Top 2005 Software Product of the Year by the Long Island Software and Technology Network (LISTnet)
Using minimal hardware and point-and-click techniques, the user can configure each carrier, while viewing the actual trace on the workstation screen. If any carrier falls outside its user-defined limits, the system activates an alarm and notifies operations staff to take corrective action.
How It Works
The SpyGlass Server software interfaces to an RF switch and spectrum analyzer. It utilizes the spectrum analyzer to take RF carrier measurements, which, together with their corresponding configurations, are stored in a SQL database. SpyGlass Client software reads measurements from the SQL database and the SpyGlass server to provide the user with a simple interface. The client also allows the user to configure remotely the carriers to be measured, view measurement trends, and control the spectrum analyzer remotely.
The SpyGlass CMS system was designed to provide a low-cost method for satellite communication operators to monitor the status of their RF carriers by using off-the-shelf hardware, usually already available to most communications operators. The system can be installed in many diverse environments with minimal effort utilizing off-the-shelf hardware and/or software. Alll measurements and calculations are performed by the software system rather than expensive hardware/DSP systems.
