Supporting a Responsible Use of the C-band in Africa

The telecommunications mobile community is again asking for more radio frequencies (‘spectrum’), and again one of the candidate bands is the satellite “C-band” (ie: from 3,4GHz to 4,2GHz) to meet the growing demand for data services globally. The upcoming ITU World Radiocommunications Conference “WRC 2015” includes a formal agenda item under which a decision on this matter is to be taken. Such a decision must be taken based on real facts and today these facts clearly show that the mobile community does not need more spectrum. A number of recently published reports provide evidence that the mobile industry has over evaluated its true need for more spectrum. Across the world less than 50% of mobile spectrum is licensed and even less of it is in use. Read more.

Teleport operators typically succeed by entering market niches – media & entertainment, enterprise, government, transportation, mobile – and learning how to serve them well. They become strong competitors by adding services and capabilities, and by growing geographically through partnerships or acquisitions. But they also face opportunities to bring their services and capabilities to new vertical markets. The media-centric operator may pursue enterprise networking business, or the maritime player may decide that serving mobile carriers and building expertise in mobile technology can create valuable synergies.
