How to Deliver Compelling Services over High-Throughput Networks

High-throughput satellites and ground technology have advanced from a niche business to a new satellite architecture. Applications range from consumer broadband, delivered by the megabit over tightly-engineered, vertically-aligned networks, to conventional megahertz services using more advanced technology, new frequency bands and spotbeams. Teleport operators typically find little opportunity in the consumer broadband business, because the network is controlled end-to-end by the satellite operator. But the HTS service model is evolving in other markets to take advantage of much higher throughputs and incorporate frequency bands with big cost advantages. In this panel, service providers with experience delivering large bandwidth applications share what they know about the market so far, and how they expect applications and customer demand to change. Becoming a Mobility Service Provider: Niches, Technologies and Skills

Extending mobile communications via satellite is one of the bright spots of the satellite services business. Euroconsult estimates that the number of sites leveraging satellite backhaul surged between 2007 and 2012, tripling to reach 16,000 sites and consuming 15.5 GHz of satellite capacity. How can managed service providers best seize the opportunities created by demand for mobility and mobile services? They must know how to optimize their solutions to get the most out of satellite bandwidth, whether using fixed capacity to provide the international gateway for a country or region, or managing a network of satellite-connected base stations sharing a bandwidth pool. Reaching deeper into the niche, some service providers are even becoming providers of hosted switching and delivering a complete outsourced solution for customers. In this panel, managed service providers will discuss the service niches, geographic hot spots and the mix of technologies and skills required to enter this market and succeed. The cloud services market was estimated to be worth $131 billion in 2013, according to Gartner, representing a 42% growth rate over the prior year. How can satellite service providers get a piece of that growth to add to their revenue mix? Traditionally, satellite services have focused too much on basic connectivity, and involved too much manual operation, to be taken seriously in the cloud market. But the evolution of teleports into data centers, and the revolution in automation of ground segment operations, is forcing a re-think of tradition. Both media and data customers are asking ground-based service providers to take on responsibility for hosting and managing content, and on managing networks end-to-end. As the line between teleports and content delivery networks blurs, what are leading-edge operators doing to seize the emerging opportunities? How are their businesses being reshaped by the chance to access a new and broader market?
